OCs, Original Characters and their use of Creativity
The art of originality comes in various ways, whether as original pieces of art or even as a showing more to the art community. In this matter, the term “OC” comes to use as many artist tend to make a lot of them.
Now some may be asking, “What on earth is an OC?” An OC, or Original Character comes from the artist from communities and made into interesting stories and fascinating interactions among others. A lot of thought goes into: Personality, Designs, Backstory, and more to make possibly a few more. A lot of creativity goes into each design when you see a lot of platforms of: TV, Animations, Video Games, and more various “communities” around medias. So let’s take a look at few here, seeing their designs and stories.
Here we have one for example, Agatha, done by the artist known as Lady-BnC. The artist depicts her from the animation, Hazbin Hotel, a story of the Princess of Hell trying to redeem the sinners of damnation. Look how the accurate 1840’s Victorian Era is drawn with clothes and hair made. The accuracy in this character’s clothing and her description fits perfectly how she made her way down to Hell. Even the Color scheme helps resemble of a possible Purple Heart of either representation or more. The idea of a maid getting revenge after being wronged is genius and adds more characters. This isn’t a one-dimensional character, this maid is a broken heart demon who just wants to find a happily ever after.
Yet it doesn’t have to come to down to just to be one personality, they can have several. Look here at the character, Claire, done by artist Panny or Paneritas. The concept of her went many changes over the years with her character. However, the artist settled on making her more in to the world of Cuphead. The character herself can be sweet and innocent, but can be also a very devious girl. You just don’t need to believe the puppy eyes and crocodile tears here. The evolution of her transformation from the resident evil series to now a game of rubber hose. It only took a few tries to get this character into the right spotlight.
Speaking of revamping, a lot of characters have gone through changes some small or some large. Now here is the another character of Cuphead, the name being Odd Cat. Artist fnafmangl has focused on her art of Rubber hose here. The idea of this fascinating feline friend is quite intriguing as it seems to run the logic of a gentleman Cheshire cat. At first the cat seems to be built for his chest and not as much for the limbs. However, the change into a muscular cat makes a change. The transformation or the revamp makes him stand out better than before. He looks more of gentleman, that helps any woman in distress and isn’t afraid to fight for the woman he desires. The best way to describe him is: A sophisticated gentleman with a few tricks up his pink tuxedo and ready to charm the next girl in his path.
Yet among most characters, there are few who can be changes into original source material. Now artist know to keep in mind of the originality that made their fandom grow for their interests . In some cases, they tend to make an alternative in some ways, like this sweet angel here. Phoebe, created by IridescentInkAngel, is a Bendy and the Ink Machine (BATIM) original character for the angel aspect missing in the game by TheMeatly. Their artist has kept the work of how satanic cults, but alternating it to have most characters fit. As long as you can keep the originality of what made them special, then it would be no issue. To describe this angel, “she’s can be very playful and adventurous when it comes to exploring new things like her home in Heaven.” The perfect mix of a young child and making true pure innocence here with this sweet angel.
As for an artist myself, I have created a few ideas on characters that being one of originality. An artist I know off my many discord servers I am in, came to us for a fun idea of making a pumpkin family. In my time of drawing Original Characters, you need only a few things: An idea, music, inspiration, references on body, and what will be their full on personality in expressions. Ichabod, pun intended on Sleepy Hollow, came to be after a joke on the story and movie. Ideas for characters will always come from the mind of artists, and it doesn’t those who have done it for years to come up with anything in weeks. It gives the artist a chance to try out designs and see what will stick for them, Whatever the outcome, the results will be great to see.
